In the Five Element theory, there are five seasons instead of the traditional four. Late summer is the shortest, hottest season that begins around the 3rd week of August and lasts until the Autumn solstice. This time is related to the Earth element. It is during Late Summer that the Earth is abundant with growth, giving us nourishing fruits and vegetables to eat. It is also a time of great transition between the hot summer and the cool autumn, readying us for the cold winter temperatures. During transitional periods, it is extremely important to stay centered, or “grounded.” Take some time for rest and relaxation, clear your mind and worries – this is may be why it is such a popular time of year to take a vacation!
In TCM, the Earth element is related to the Stomach and Spleen organs. Within this system, the Spleen is not viewed as the anatomical spleen (main function to filter blood), but is responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption. Its primary function is converting food into energy, and it is the transporter of Qi (life-force energy). Just like in nature, the Earth element within the body is nurturing, providing nutrients to build blood and muscle and to make the body strong. Light exercise and stretching is recommended during this time but don’t overdo it in the heat.
The taste related to the Earth element is sweet. It is important not to eat processed, sugary foods in excess because these can actually damage the Spleen and weaken digestion. The best foods to eat during this period are light, healthy foods that come directly from the earth itself, with as little processing as possible. Naturally sweet foods such as watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes and pears are good choices this time of year. Fresh vegetables that are in season and cooling in nature to balance the hot outside temperatures include cucumber, spinach, lettuce, peppers, celery, radish, carrots and cauliflower. Summer herbs like basil, cilantro, parsley and mint are healthy additions to your summer recipes. It is important to eat slowly, chew well and not to overeat, especially in the heat. Even during the hottest days, avoid drinking large amounts of ice-cold drinks because the extreme coldness can also damage the Earth element and weaken digestion. Have you ever noticed that the Chinese drink hot tea even on the hottest day? They believe that the warmth from the tea causes a little perspiration and actually cools the body from within while keeping the Spleen, and thus digestion, strong.
Taking care of Earth helps reap your own harvest, and feel fulfilled. A healthy Earth element helps you feel at home in all situations; so enjoy the fruits of your work and create the space to relax, and nourish self, family and friends.
