We have put together a list of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about acupuncture with our answers below. Please give us a call at (610) 674-0577 if you have any other questions.

How should I prepare for a treatment?

  • Write down and bring any questions you have. We are here to help you.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points.
  • It is best to eat a light meal 30 minutes to 1 hour before your treatment and be well hydrated; do not eat large meals just before or after your visit.
  • Refrain from overexertion, drugs or alcohol for up to six hours after the visit.
  • Avoid stressful situations. Make time to relax, and be sure to get plenty of rest.
  • Between visits, take notes of any changes that may have occurred, such as the alleviation of pain, pain moving to other areas, or changes in the frequency and type of problems.

What happens at an acupuncture visit?

Prior to coming to the office for the first time, you will fill out your health history online so the acupuncturist can review it prior to your visit. During your initial session, your acupuncturist will take a detailed health history, perform a physical exam, which may include orthopedic tests, looking at your tongue and examining your pulse. From this, an individualized treatment plan will be designed and administered. This plan may include acupuncture as well as adjunctive techniques, such as cupping, bodywork, electro stimulation, gua sha, or heat therapy, if indicated. This initial meeting typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Treatments during subsequent visits will be adapted to your progress and will generally last about 50 minutes.

Why do you want to feel my pulse?

There are twelve pulse positions on each wrist that your acupuncturist will palpate. Each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ. Your acupuncturist will be looking for qualities that reflect overall health. If there are any problems, they may appear in the pulse.

Why do you want to look at my tongue?

The tongue is a map of the body. It reflects the general health of the organs and meridians. Your acupuncturist will look at the color, shape, cracks and coating on your tongue.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on what condition is being treated and will be discussed at your first appointment.  The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take months or even years to achieve results. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute ones. Plan on a minimum of a month to see significant changes.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes!  Acupuncture is a safe and effective way to alleviate many discomforts commonly associated with pregnancy.  In addition, acupuncture can be used to help promote a more efficient labor.  In fact, many midwives and obstetricians refer their pregnant patients to get acupuncture treatments.

Is acupuncture safe for children?

Yes! In some instances children actually respond more quickly than adults. If your child has an aversion to needles, your acupuncturist may massage the acupuncture points. This is called acupressure or Tui Na.

Can I exercise, go to a yoga class, get a massage, go to physical therapy, chiropractic etc. before or after acupuncture?

Yes, you can combine acupuncture with any other type of health care or exercise at any time.  We encourage you to do any other activities that help you to feel your best, but to avoid overexertion.
